What role do volunteers play at The Salvation Army?
In 2010, volunteers contributed nearly 55,901 hours in Dane County.
The Salvation Army attributes much of its success to its generous volunteers. Many programs rely upon donated time. In fact, the help provided to those in need would not be possible without the hours contributed by devoted volunteers.
How can I help?
We appreciate your taking the time to partner with us here at The Salvation Army. For most volunteer opportunities, no previous experience is required. All we ask is a sincere desire to use the talents you already have. We will provide “on the job training”. We are excited to be able to offer you the opportunity to share your time, life experience, and abilities. In many cases we will have a place for you to use your gifts, but also make a great impact on local lives!
What are the tasks I would be asked to perform?
There are many areas where we can use your help. The Salvation Army offers a wide range of opportunities to serve in both non-skilled and skilled positions. We will try to find the best match for your talents.

How do I apply to be a volunteer?
We will ask you to complete a volunteer application to assist us in matching talents and opportunities. The next step is to schedule a meeting with the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator to find a good fit between your interests and schedule and the needs of The Salvation Army.
Can my group or company volunteer?
Of course! Volunteering in groups is a great way to build team spirit in your organization, whether you are a member of a club or a corporation. Please contact the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator for more information on behalf of your group.
I didn't see a volunteer opportunity that uses my skills . . . Now what?
Send us an email describing your skills and interests. You may see a helpful service we have overlooked. Be creative – design your own project! We could never list all of the creative and wonderful ways people have helped us, and we are always eager to hear your ideas.
For example-
- Shoe gift card drive (for local shoe stores)
- Suds drive (soaps of all kinds)
- Wrap drive (aluminum, plastic wrap, baggies)
- Penny drive for kids
- Backpack and school supply drive
