- The Salvation Army spends 85% to 90% of its income on programs to assist people in need - earning one of the highest efficiency ratings possible. Charity Watch gives The Salvation Army-Central Territory an A-rating for human services.
Most people recognize the name "The Salvation Army" but don't really know the many services we provide in Dane County. The Salvation Army of Dane County has been helping local residents for over 120 years, but few know the range of assistance we offer and how important our mission is to our community.
Family Shelter
■ Open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to provide food, shelter, clothing, and safety to parents and children in need.
■ Gatekeeper for all homeless in Dane County, helping find temporary housing at various locations.
■ 22 families (about 60 people) in shelter. One-third of parents are working.
■ Each family is provided case management, private quarters, three meals a day, evening snack, laundry facilities.
■ Stays usually limited to 90 days.
■ 160 families served annually; majority find permanent housing at the end of their shelter stay.
Family Stabilization
■ Serves families exiting the Homeless Shelter or are at risk of losing current housing.
■ On average, 90% of our families are still in their apartments after one year.
■ Clients develop the following stability skills: money management, employment readiness, and ability to make crucial choices and decisions, including productive landlord-tenant interaction.
■ Some day-to-day living assistance is provided by supplying essential items such as diapers, toilet paper, grooming needs, etc...
■ Clients who prove themselves may be eligible for one-time emergency funding.
■ Assistance of a few hundred dollars in an emergency may avoid homelessness with much higher financial and emotional costs.
Single Women's Homeless Shelter
■ Accommodates up to 30 women per night on a first-come basis. Stays are limited, but extensions may be granted to women working with case managers to find permanent jobs and housing.
■ During the past year, 532 women, ranging in age from 18 to 87, were served at the shelter.
■ 160 clients who received case management successfully completed all program requirements. Most were able to secure housing and employment.
Holly House for Single Women
■ Accommodates up to 8 women who stay up to 24 months while becoming self-sufficient members of the community.
■ Each woman is expected to find employment and make a payment from her income toward program expenses.
■ Residents cooperate in intensive case management and are mentored to develop employment readiness and practical life skills. Volunteers provide GED tutoring and computer training classes.
■ Over 60 percent of the residents successfully maintain housing and employment.
Overflow Shelter (mattresses on hallway floor)
■ Emergency program, open year-round. Insures homeless persons are warm, safe, and well-fed.
■ Each year the shelter provides approximately 4,500 nights of shelter plus case management services.
House-ability Program
■ Subsidizes housing and provides case management for 23 homeless families with an adult in the household who has a disabling condition that impedes the ability to live independently.
■ Participants pay 30% of their income in program fees and must participate in case management.
Food Pantry
■ Serves residents of Dane County who meet income guidelines.
■ Serves up to 30 families every day. Each party may use the pantry once a month.
■ Depends on cash and in-kind contributions from individuals and groups.
Christmas Programs
Through the generosity of Dane County community, The Salvation Army brightens the holidays for many needy individuals:
■ Angel Tree: 500 gifts provided.
■ Adopt-a-Family: 250 families.
■ Christmas food boxes: 3,200 families.
■ Toys for Tots (in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps): 3,200 families.
■ 2,400 visits to nursing homes and shut-ins.
Disaster Services Canteen
■ Assists first responders in local, regional, and national emergencies - fires, tornadoes, and national disasters
such as 9/11 and Katrina.
■ Aids police officers and the public at Dane County community gatherings.
Youth Programs For Children and Teens:
■ Tutoring Program.
■ Girls' Dance and Drill Team.
■ Basketball League.
■ Computer Lab.
■ Jujitsu (2 state & national champions).
■ Asian Volleyball League.
■ Kids Cafe & Summer Day Camp serves 230 meals a week to the Worthington-Darbo neighborhood children.
Medical/Dental Clinics
■ Medical and dental exams and treatment, for those in The Salvation Army homeless shelter care system.
■ Community Pharmacy offers medicines at reduced cost.
■ Partners with the UW Medical school.
Community Meals
■ Saturday Night Soup Kitchen feeds 75 to 160 persons.
■ Sunday breakfast serves 100+ weekly.
■ Over 12,000 meals served annually to people not in shelter.
■ Many community churches and organizations volunteer time and donate food to serve these free meals.
Salvation Army Ministry (3030 Darbo Drive)
■ Sunday Church services.
■ Laotian services.
■ Sunday School and Bible study.
■ Sunday community lunch serves 40 to 50.
