The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team is on call 24 hours a day to assist police, firefighters, and victims at the scene of tornados, fires, and other disasters in Dane County and surrounding areas. The canteen also assists at local events, such as parades, community-wide celebrations, and racing events.
In 2005, the team served at the Lake Mendota boat landing during the search for two lost boaters. It assisted responders at the Stoughton church fire and was on duty for several weeks feeding residents, clean-up volunteers, and police at the site of the Stoughton tornado.
Dane County’s canteen may be called to assist other Salvation Army units in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as well as in other states across the country. Members of the Dane County team have served in Florida during the 2004 hurricanes, at Ground Zero in New York City and, most recently, in New Orleans and Texas in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Volunteers Needed
Team members are needed to staff the Emergency Disaster Services Canteen on a rotating basis to handle emergency calls, which may arise at any time. Under the supervision of Salvation Army staff, volunteers will be trained to stock and drive the canteen, prepare food, and serve meals and beverages at emergency scenes.
